Is A Furnace The Best Fit For Your Home?

Construction & Contractors Blog

If you are trying to figure out which type of heating is best for your home, then you have likely already considered the possibility of a traditional furnace. However, you might not be too familiar with exactly how furnaces work and how they compare to some of the alternative options. To help you figure out whether furnaces are the best choice for your home, here are a couple of topics to consider:

How do furnaces work?

In essence, a furnace converts some form of fuel into heat. Electricity and natural gas are commonly used, but propane and heating oil are also possible. You could even burn wood to power a crude furnace.

In most cases, the output of these furnaces is then used to heat up air. That air is then used to rapidly distribute the air throughout the home, often through a series of air ducts in the walls and ceilings, collectively known as the ventilation. This means that a central heating system depends not only on the actual heater, but also on the state of the air ducts that are used to get the heat where it needs to go.

What are the differences between gas and electric furnaces?

The most popular forms of fuel for furnaces are electricity and gas. Electricity used to be a more efficient option, but as the availability of natural gas increases, the price of natural gas drops quite a bit. Therefore, if you live in an area that has easy access to natural gas, then you will likely be able to save money by going for gas instead of electricity.

If you use a solar system, then electricity is probably going to be a much better option, since solar systems actually store the power of the sun as electricity. This electricity can then be used to power your home, but if you have a natural gas heater, then that solar power can not be used for heating purposes.

How do furnaces compare to space heaters?

One of your other options is to get a space heater, which does offer some specific benefits. For example, if you are looking to heat one or two rooms, then a space heater will be able to fulfill your needs with minimal waste.

However, if you want to heat your whole home, then a central furnace will likely be much more efficient. On top of that, while a space heater might get in your way, a central furnace is practically invisible in your day-to-day life.
