Using pallet racking is one of the most common and effective ways of storing things in your warehouse. However, the way that you arrange it does make a difference in how efficient your warehouse and your storage system are. When installing your pallet racking, follow these tips to make storage easier.
1. Ensure Your Aisles are Wide Enough
First of all, you have to make sure that your aisles are wide enough. This is a common mistake in many warehouses, but it's a serious one; even though you might think that you can pack more shelving units into your warehouse if you put them closer together, doing so will cause a lot more accidents. This is particularly true if you use forklifts or other material handling equipment in your warehouse. Measure a space that is wide enough for at least one forklift to travel through safely and easily. If possible, consider leaving enough room for two forklifts to be on each aisle at one time.
2. Look Upward and Not Outward
When you are planning for your pallet racking, you should consider looking upward rather than outward. This means that you should consider installing taller shelving units rather than opting for shorter ones. This is a smart way that you can take advantage of the floor space that is available. Just make sure that you have the right equipment on hand to retrieve items from the higher shelves, and consider storing items that won't be needed as frequently on the higher shelves.
3. Ensure It's Properly Anchored
It is important to ensure that your pallet racks are properly anchored. Pallet racks that will hold heavy items can be anchored to the floor or can be anchored to the walls. For example, if you have concrete floors in your warehouse, you can anchor your pallet racks to the floor by using wedge or strike anchors. This will help them stay in place when heavy items are being placed on them and when the pallet racks are shifting around, such as while a forklift is being used to remove items from the shelving. Also, make sure that you put heavier items on the bottom shelves to ensure that your pallet racks stay steady.
As you can see, installing pallet racking in your warehouse does take a little bit of planning. If you take your time to follow these tips now, you can ensure that your pallet racks work well for you and your company in the long run.
